Episode 2

How to Talk to Animals

Ears forward, ears back, soft eyes. Nana visits the whole herd to show how animals say a great deal without saying a single word, and how staying calm helps them feel safe.

Nana visits with a whole herd of barn friends to teach kids how animals “talk” through body language instead of words. Watching Lucy, Betsy, and Teddy, she shows how forward ears and soft, calm eyes signal interest and happiness, while pinned-back ears (like Betsy’s) can mean an animal is telling a friend to move along. She explains how staying quiet and calm herself helps horses like Stanley and Poppy relax and trust her, and introduces Molly the miniature donkey, a once-fearful animal who has learned to feel safe through gentle, deliberate care. The episode also features Banks (an easygoing “grandpa” of the herd), Henry the dog and Henry the horse both showing affection through soft eyes and reciprocal scratching, and Bernard, an “old soul” horse who prefers quiet one-on-one company over rowdy play. Nana closes by tying it all together: animals communicate through their eyes, ears, and tails, and by staying calm and gentle, we can help them feel safe, understood, and loved.

What this episode teaches

  • Body language is a language — Kids learn to “read” an animal’s feelings through ears (forward = interested, pinned back = upset), eyes (soft and calm = happy, relaxed), and tail movement — building early emotional literacy that also applies to understanding others’ feelings.
  • Calm behavior invites calm responses — Nana models how speaking quietly and moving slowly and gently helps a nervous or shy animal (like Molly) feel safe, teaching kids that their own energy affects how others — animal or human — feel around them.
  • Everyone communicates differently — From playful Teddy to reserved Bernard, the episode shows that individuals (animal or person) have different comfort levels and personalities, and that we can show love and respect by meeting each one where they are.

Themes: Animal body language and nonverbal communication, empathy, calmness as a caregiving tool, individual personalities, respecting shy or fearful animals.
