Horse Colors and Sidewalk Chalk Art

Palomino, chestnut, chocolate, paint and gray. Then out to the driveway to draw a pony in sidewalk chalk, purple outline optional.

Nana takes kids on a tour of the barn to learn the special names horses use for their colors. They meet Tansy, an athletic, friendly Haflinger with a caramel-colored coat and a light “flaxen” mane (a color combination called palomino); Sophie and Ella, two look-alike “chestnut” (red) horses with blonde manes, each with her own unique facial marking; Mr. Chocolate, a brown horse whose coat is called “chocolate” with a flaxen mane; Miss McKenzie, a black-and-white “paint” horse; and Banks, a 26-year-old horse who looks white but is actually called “gray” in horse terms. After the color tour, Nana heads outside for sidewalk chalk art, drawing a horse step by step, turning it into a fun make-believe “chestnut paint” with a purple outline, and finishing with her signature touch — a little heart signed “Nana.” She encourages kids to grab a few colors of chalk and get creative drawing anything they like.

What this episode teaches

  • New vocabulary for colors — Kids learn that horses have special color names — palomino, chestnut, chocolate, paint, and gray (for what looks white) — building descriptive vocabulary and categorization skills.
  • Details and identifying features — By comparing look-alike horses like Sophie and Ella, kids practice noticing small distinguishing details (a blaze, a star, graying hair) — an early observation and comparison skill.
  • Creativity over perfection — Nana models that art doesn’t need to be “the best” to be worth doing — mistakes can be fixed, colors can be imaginative (a purple horse!), and having fun matters more than getting it “right.”

Themes: Horse coat colors and vocabulary, observation of markings and details, creativity and imperfection in art, self-expression, having fun regardless of skill level.
