Episode 1
Meeting the Farm Animals
A first walk around the farm to meet Handsome, Franklin, Martha, Milton and the horses. Nana shows where everyone eats, sleeps and plays, and why each animal is a little different.
Nana opens the gate and walks little viewers around the farm to meet the friends they will see all season: Handsome the golden retriever, Franklin the Holland Lop bunny, Martha the miniature horse, Milton the miniature donkey, and several of Nana’s horses. Inside the barn, kids find out where horses eat, sleep, and rest. Then everyone heads outside to the paddock, and further out to the pasture where the bigger horses spend their day — a chance to see a miniature horse and a full-size one side by side. Along the way Nana points out that every animal has its own personality, that animals make friendships just as children do, and that the way we treat them — kindly, gently, quietly — is what helps them feel safe. It is the gentlest possible introduction to the ranch, and the best place to start.
What this episode teaches
- Where farm animals live — Kids learn what a barn is and why animals use it, what a paddock is, and what a pasture is, building the vocabulary they will hear in every episode that follows.
- Big, small, and different — Seeing Martha the miniature horse beside a full-size horse, and a donkey beside a dog beside a bunny, gives children a concrete way to compare sizes and to notice that each animal is built, fed, and cared for a little differently.
- Kindness is how we say hello — Nana models a calm voice and gentle hands around every animal, teaching that animals have their own personalities and friendships, and that gentle care is how we earn their trust.
Themes: Meeting the animals, farm and barn vocabulary, size comparison, animal personalities and friendships, kindness and gentle care.
Word of the day
The fenced yard just outside the barn, where the horses go to stretch their legs. It is smaller than a pasture — the paddock is the playground, and the pasture is the park.
