Episode 7

A Nature Walk

Nature is not only deep in the woods. Nana and Handsome walk down the driveway and find flowers, birdhouses, baby birds and a creek, plus a few quiet ways to reset a hard day.

Nana and Handsome take a different kind of nature walk — not through the woods, but right down the driveway — proving that nature can be found anywhere. Along the way, they admire salvia and hollyhock flowers and learn about petals and the stamen, discover that not all flowers have a fragrance, and visit a bird bath and fountain designed to attract birds with the sight of moving water. They encounter a concrete fox and a concrete deer statue tucked among the plants, learn how to “deadhead” spent blooms so plants can focus energy on new flowers, and explore several birdhouses and natural nests — including one with cheeping baby birds, which they leave alone so the parents can return. Nana shares personal touches along the walk, like wind chimes and a wooden swing that help her slow down and reset, and a tree stump that now serves as a resting spot even after the tree itself came down. The walk ends at a creek, where they talk about the animals — deer, raccoons, possums, skunks, and birds — that come to drink, and Nana shows (with good humor) how deer have snacked on her planted flowers overnight, embracing the trade-off of sharing her yard with wildlife.

What this episode teaches

  • Nature is everywhere, not just “out there” — By finding so much to explore in a driveway walk, kids learn that nature — flowers, birds, water, wildlife signs — is part of everyday surroundings, not only something found deep in the woods.
  • Plants and living things have cycles — Kids see blooming flowers, spent blooms being pinched off to make room for new growth, and a tree stump still serving a purpose after the tree is gone — an early, gentle introduction to growth, endings, and renewal.
  • Calming tools and mindfulness — Nana models simple ways to reset feelings — sitting on a swing, listening to wind chimes, or listening to flowing water — showing kids that quiet, sensory moments in nature can help calm a difficult mood.

Themes: Everyday nature appreciation, plant life cycles, bird behavior and habitats, sensory calming (sound, water, swinging), coexisting with wildlife, mindfulness and resetting a bad day.
